Be aware that 30 min a day of walking will burn approximately 100-150 calories a day.  In an average person this will be around 1/3 of a pound a week of weight loss.  The key benefit from walking is the balancing to your autonomic nervous system.  It is good for flexibility as well.  If you are using it as the only exercise to burn calories then long distance walking for an hour or two a day is the way to do it.
